Doors that open with zero force — until they need to close

The ECO Schulte FTS III is a free-swing door closer — a specialist type of overhead closer designed for buildings where residents and users may struggle with the effort of pushing through a fire door. Under normal conditions, the door swings freely, held open electromagnetically. When a smoke detector or fire alarm activates, the closer releases and the door shuts automatically, restoring its function as a fire and smoke barrier.

Certified to EN 1155 for electrically powered hold-open devices, the FTS III is specified into care homes, schools, hospitals and residential entrances where accessibility, safety and fire protection all need to work together.

Where the FTS III matters most

The FTS III is specified into buildings where the effort of pushing through a fire door is genuinely a problem for the people who use it every day:

  • Care homes and residential facilities — where residents may have reduced strength or mobility.
  • Schools and kindergartens — where children may struggle with heavy fire doors.
  • Hospitals and clinics — where patients, visitors and staff with occupied hands or reduced mobility use fire doors constantly.
  • Residential entrances — where a smoke-tight, self-closing door is required by Building Regulations, but daily use needs to feel effortless.

In each of these settings, the FTS III delivers the fire safety of a self-closing door without imposing the closing force on people who can’t easily overcome it.

Recognised for form and function

The ECO Schulte FTS III has been awarded the ICONIC Award: Innovative Interior 2023, an international design award recognising contemporary developments and special design achievements in the built environment.

The award acknowledges both the FTS III’s functional qualities — accessibility, fire safety and free-swing operation — and its refined aesthetic, with a unified design language that integrates naturally into architectural planning for care facilities, schools, hospitals and residential buildings.
