The Trade-Off Most Concealed Doors Get Wrong

An automatic door looks best when you can’t see how it works — the operator tucked above the false ceiling, no header box, the ceiling line running clean through the opening. In low-ceiling spaces it’s often the only way to fit an automatic door at all. On the drawing, concealment costs nothing.

In the building, it costs access. An automatic door is a machine, and machines need maintenance — which means every service visit to a buried operator starts with opening the ceiling: lifted tiles, cut plasterboard, or an improvised access panel that breaks the very line the detail was drawn for. Too often the choice reads as flush ceiling or serviceable door, pick one.

What A Concealed Operator Needs — And Why Access Decides It

An automatic pedestrian door isn’t a fit-and-forget product. The safety standard it’s specified to, EN 16005, assumes the door is kept in a safe condition through its working life — and that means regular inspection and planned maintenance by a competent engineer, for as long as the building operates. A door that can’t be reached can’t be maintained, and a maintenance regime that starts with dismantling the ceiling is one that quietly stops happening.

That’s the gap in most concealed-door details. The operator is drawn above the false ceiling and the access question is left to site — resolved late with a generic ceiling hatch in the wrong place, a demountable panel that never sits flush again after the first visit, or nothing at all. The concealment survives to handover; the serviceability doesn’t.

A complete detail solves both at once: purpose-made access that is part of the door assembly itself — sized to the operator, positioned exactly where the engineer needs to work, and finished as part of the ceiling. That’s what the RS header inspection hatch is for, and because it arrives as a single unit with the door operator, the detail can’t get lost between the drawing and the finished ceiling.

Concealing The Operator, Properly

The Portalp RS header inspection hatch is a made-to-length access hatch — an aluminium trap with steel end-cap extensions — that fixes directly to the end caps of an RS automatic door and conceals the mechanism within the false ceiling. It’s compatible with RS sliding and two-leaf telescopic doors, single or double, in custom lengths up to six metres, with hangers added on longer hatches to keep the whole assembly rigid and stable.

Serviceability is built into the hardware. Quarter-turn cam locks open the hatch quickly and securely for maintenance visits; two holding bars keep it open while the engineer works; anti-lift nuts secure it in place — blocking removal or allowing it, as the detail requires. Detection and security radars integrate into the hatch itself at up to three positions, so sensors sit flush instead of surface-mounted, and the hatch comes in a RAL finish to sit harmoniously in the ceiling.

Delivered as a single unit with the door operator and installed by MF Services as one assembly, it’s a detail specified once and resolved for the life of the door — a 100mm-high, 230mm-deep header line in place of a ceiling that has to be opened.
