It’s also the door architects fight hardest to make disappear: specified flush to the corridor wall, drawn seamless, and then too often delivered proud, packed out on site, fire-stopped with mastic, and dented by following trades before handover.

The specification intent is right. What defeats it is everything that happens between the drawing and the finished wall — inaccurate apertures, improvised packers, and a fire-stopping detail left to whoever is standing nearest.

What A Riser Door Has To Do — And Why The Installation Decides It

Irish fire safety design works from compartmentation: Part B of the Building Regulations expects fire to be contained where it starts, and a riser shaft is the one void that connects every floor. The riser door protects that opening from both sides — preventing fire entering or escaping the shaft and spreading through the building. The doorsets we specify carry bi-directional fire ratings of up to 2 hours, tested to EN and BS standards in UKAS approved laboratories, with certification available for every doorset we propose. Smoke-sealed (S-rated) and thermally insulated options are available where the fire strategy calls for them — and in fire situations, steel doorsets will outperform timber door sets.

Two things are worth asking about that most specifications miss. First, whether the rating is bi-directional — a riser door can face fire from either side, and not every doorset is tested both ways. Second, for shafts opening onto escape corridors, whether a radiation-limiting (EW-classified) doorset is warranted — one that limits heat radiation as well as maintaining integrity, so the corridor stays passable, not just smoke-free. Few standard riser doors offer this; we can advise where it’s available and where it earns its place.

But a fire rating is only as good as its installation. A doorset packed and bodged into an out-of-tolerance aperture isn’t the doorset that was tested — and fire ratings are expressly subject to the wall construction and the installation complying with the manufacturer’s instructions. That’s why the frame system matters as much as the certificate, and why it belongs in the specification rather than being left to site.

An Adjustable Frame For The Aperture You Actually Get

Site apertures are never as true as the drawing. The difference between a flush riser door and a proud, packed-out one is usually the frame system — which is why we specify doorsets with adjustable frames that can be levelled and plumbed within the opening, correcting for out-of-tolerance apertures without resorting to improvised packers and mastic. The result is a doorset installed the way it was tested, with a leading edge that sits genuinely flush.

Just as important is matching the frame to the ope structure and the finish detail: blockwork and precast need different fixings and liner details than studwork or shaftwall; a wall that’s plastered after installation wants a different frame profile than one that’s already finished. A Finish That Disappears Into The Wall

Steel riser doors are finished in paint-ready powder coat as standard, ready to take the wall colour — with options to emulsion or wallpaper directly over the leaf, or order factory-finished colours to match the scheme. Frame profiles run from concealed beaded frames that plaster right up to the door edge, through clean picture-frame surrounds for finished walls, to minimal safety-edge details and raised profiles for pre-plastered walls — and no-threshold options let the door sit down onto the floor or skirting.

Security and everyday use are handled just as quietly: multi-point locking with Euro-profile cylinders, stainless steel ironmongery, heavy-duty pivot hinges, and concealed-keyhole options — so the wall reads as a wall, not as a door.

Which wall constructions can they go into?

Studwork, masonry and shaft wall partitions — with frame and fixing details matched to each. The partition itself must meet the required fire performance; we advise on the wall build-up as part of the specification.
