A door handle from the lowest rung of the material pyramid

Every specification now carries a sustainability question, and most “green” hardware answers it with a certificate. The MOOM door handle answers it with the material itself: crushed mussel shells — a residual product of food production that would otherwise be discarded — bound with recycled plastic bottles and a biomaterial. The shell content locks away CO₂ absorbed by the mussels as they grew, and the composite gives every handle a marble-like surface that is one of a kind.

Developed by Danish handle specialist Randi and brought to Ireland by MF Services, MOOM is the rare product that gives a design-led answer and a sustainability answer in the same breath — which is exactly why an expert jury at BAU handed it the AIT Innovation Award for Architecture + Construction ahead of 136 other innovations.

At BAU in Munich — the world’s leading trade fair for architecture, materials and systems — MOOM took the AIT Innovation Award for Architecture + Construction, selected by an expert jury from 136 innovations entered by 70 companies. The jury’s verdict cut to exactly what specifiers ask of hardware today: not only is MOOM an aesthetically accomplished product, it genuinely fulfils architects’ requirements for sustainability.

It’s recognition of a simple idea done properly — that the most sustainable material might be the one already piling up as waste.

I grew up in the construction industry. My close family were carpenters and architects. Therefore the conversations in the family were often about navigating the construction industry and future requirements.

Designed by an architect who builds libraries

MOOM comes from Bjarne Hammer — co-founder of schmidt hammer lassen, the Danish practice behind buildings like the Royal Danish Library’s Black Diamond in Copenhagen and Dokk1 in Aarhus. After decades at the centre of one of Scandinavia’s most recognised studios, Hammer now runs Studio Hammer, a sustainable design practice in Frederiksberg.

Building is in the family — his father and grandfather were carpenters, and he grew up in the construction industry among carpenters and architects. That heritage shows in MOOM: a handle designed by someone who understands what architects need a product to do — aesthetically, technically and environmentally — before it earns a place on a door schedule.
